Hundreds of millions of dollars in funding has been raised by refurbished tech platforms as consumer demand for “sustainability meets savings” increases
Two broad forces are driving the growth of the refurbished consumer tech marketplace: consumer concerns about the environment and a desire to save money as the cost of living rises (the ‘demand’). This is combined with more businesses offering the ability to buy such goods (the ‘supply’).
For example Google revealed search activity for the topic “used goods”, including the terms “second hand’ and “pre-loved,” was up over 70% year-on-year in 2023. While this trend was visible across many verticals, from fashion to furniture, data indicates a particular momentum in consumer tech.
In turn, supply is being driven by three groups: specialist refurbed tech platforms (a number of these raising at least $50 million in funding in 2023), general retailers now offering refurbed options and manufacturers with dedicated refurbed product lines.
For example, the global refurbished computers and laptops market alone is expected to grow 2.6x from $17.9 billion in 2023 to $47.3 billion by 2033.
