Wimbledon 2019 Measurement Report
About the event
Wimbledon 2019 was held from July 1 to 14 at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, London
Wimbledon is the oldest tennis tournament in the world and is considered by many as the most prestigious. It has been held at the All England Club in Wimbledon, London, since 1877 and is played on outdoor grass courts, and since 2009 with a retractable roof over Centre Court.
The ‘official suppliers’ of the event are a select group of high quality brands that align with the image and values of The Championships. Long term partnerships are evident as over half the current commercial partnerships have been in existence for more than ten years. These brands do not gain exposure through overt on-court sponsorship displays. Instead, players use their products on court (e.g. drinking Evian water) or the brands build Wimbledon into an advertising campaign to engage with digital and live audiences using technology and in-event activations.
3 broadcasters across more than 200 countries covered Wimbledon 2019 varying between free-to-air and pay TV networks. Some countries had the opportunity to watch Wimbledon on both free-to-air and pay TV services. In most of these cases the free-to-air telecast is limited in terms of variety in selection of viewable matches compared to pay TV channels.
Meanwhile, there were 316,046 media mentions of Wimbledon in the period July 1 to 15. 43% of publishers who mentioned Wimbledon in this period were based in the United Kingdom. Wimbledon suppliers and sponsors gained large amounts of media exposure leading up to and during the tournament. As Wimbledon’s data partner, IBM featured most frequently in the media compared to the other brands. IBM was also mentioned in the most countries and by the greatest number of publishers. This is due to IBM’s role as Wimbledon’s data partner, distributing instant match statistics and highlights.
Wimbledon 2019 also had a significant presence on social media. Wimbledon posted 2,198 times across their social media channels to 11.4 million followers during the period July 1-15. Furthermore the top 4 athletes (Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Serena Williams, Novak Djokovic) competing at Wimbledon in terms of social media popularity posted a collective 74 times about Wimbledon to their combined 120.7 million followers.
