Sport & Commercial Innovation Report
Discover how sports are innovating in response to changes in their audience in caytoo's latest sports report. It provides insight into the rise of short form sports like Twenty20 cricket and rugby sevens.
Sport audiences – a changing landscape
- Traditional sport broadcast consumption is changing due to social media and OTT platforms.
- Change in viewership is linked to a much larger cultural shift from traditional linear TV to digital-first and on-demand services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime. While younger audiences may still enjoy watching sport, the ways in which they access sport has changed due to the rise of web-based video content.
- Fans still have the opportunity to watch a full match, but they can also watch highlights online, often immediately after the live action has taken place.
- Fans are no longer locked in to slow moving play and extended breaks during competition – they will simply switch over to watch something else.
- Selective attention spans along with distractions from social media often leads to multiple interactions simultaneously whilst consuming sport content.
- Technological advancements have given sport fans a variety of choices for their attention and loyalty. Consumers now have more choice of what to watch and when they watch it.
- Online technology giants FAANGs (Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Netflix, Google) have entered the market who are better suited to how younger, mobile-first audiences are interacting with sports content.
- Sport is one of the few remaining times people sit down for live and scheduled televised performances. There is no longer a concept of waiting for scheduled programming as there was ten years ago. Passionate fans etc.
